The Typical American in My Opinion

There are different comments on Americans whether they are good or bad. I never met them in my country until I had a chance to study in the U.S. So the only way I learned America and American through all kinds of newspapers, internet resources and TV programs at my early age. Nevertheless, the country with multiplicity and complexity can`t be concluded by some brief stories or typical cases. Unlike the four great ancient civilizations, the most powerful country today has only more than two hundred years of history. In additional, millions of immigrants bring their cultures and viewpoints of value from all over the world to the land of freedom; and they bring distinguishing features for American life as well. Immigrants with different colors of skin are living an American life style, but they can keep their own religions and custom at the same time. Americans are willing to accept different cultures from other countries, and they merge American custom to form some new cultures. That is called American culture. Probably they inherit traditional thinking from older generations, but they won`t keep them throughout their life. On the other hand, their ideas can be changed easily, and these are typical Americans in my opinion.

Basically, most Americans are easy to get along with due to their optimistic and broad-minded character. I could felt that my project team members and fellow workers were talking to me with fervor from the bottom of their hearts even though we met at the first time. It is a lot of fun to study and work with them, because we often joke around when we are together. Besides, they are willing to provide unselfish help if I were in trouble.

I believe American teenagers are more competitive than any other countries in the world. They are encouraged to take part-time jobs for living expense by their parents when they are very young. No matter how much money they can earn from their positions, the goal of their parents is to cultivate an independent character since their early age. They seldom rely on others, and they are not hoping others rely on them as well. Kids are brought up in a different mode from my country. In China, most teenagers are still living on their parents even though they are become college students. I saw so many kids can handle their business fair and reasonable in the United States. And it is also one of the American characters that I admire the most.

America is the culture of automobile, fast food and consumption. They have bigger cars and houses. Do they have the words “save energy” in their vocabulary? Probably they don`t have. Everything seems in better conditions than any other places. Native-Americans are proud of living in the country with rich commodities. They never worry about inflation or currency devaluation will happen one day. Americans concern nothing about alternative energy until a barrel of fossil fuel reached the highest price ever in the history two years ago. Now their living habits have been changed in silence with the economic crisis broke out. People began depositing money for emergencies in the future rather than spend them without reasonable budget. How about abandon SUVs and turn to drive more economical vehicles? Just like President Obama says, “Yes, we can change!” We change in order to have better conditions, and for the generations in the future.

As the greatest immigrant country in the world, it is really difficult to define what a typical American is. People come from different background with different educational levels. Great differences are still existed throughout the country. But there is one thing in common which is they pursue their American Dream with their talent and wisdom to help building the country more and more powerful.
