In Progress Rhetorical Project Proposal

Purpose

International relationships can be improved by government efforts, and healthy international relationships can be promoted through individual efforts. Individual programs, such as, International Friends, Sisters Cities, are more effective and specific than political policies. Most people want friendship instead of war; we want to build trust rather than ignorance; and we want cooperation more than abuse. Healthy international relationships are not only important to governments, but they are also meaningful for those foreigners who are living and studying in the United States. I expect my audience to become aware of the importance of building international relationships through my text. In addition, my purpose is a call for action in support and participation in programs that help individuals to understand other countries and cultures.

Audience

My target audiences are international and American college students. University campuses are special communities, which gather many people who come from different countries, and students are a group of people who are dealing with the situation of building international relationships. Moreover, college life is the best period for meeting people, and for students, especially, knowing foreigners can be a special experience in their lives. Another reason that I focus on college students is that they, more or less, know international relationships because they are educated. Students who come from different countries are not representing only themselves living in the United States, but their motherlands. They are the windows to their cultures. So they are easily motivated to know other countries or cultures through their friends.

Context

Since 2004, there have been more than thirteen thousand students from all around the world who come to American colleges to study as international students each year (IIE Network). It is because these countries have relationships with the United States. There is no doubt about it, the percentage of international students in American classrooms is increasing year by year because these students benefit from international relationships. The Tucson community is dealing with the same situation as well, especially at The University of Arizona.

Rhetorical Strategies

Emotional appeal and Logical appeal are both suitable rhetorical strategies in my text. I am going to present how to balance these two rhetorical strategies in my text. Building international relationships through individual efforts and the proof of international relationships affect individual life are emotional appeal. I will use Historical Examples to show how urgent the current situation is in the Tucson community. I am going to apply Contrary Examples to emphasize the importance of building international relationships through individuals. And Maxims will be the most frequent sources that I am going to use in the second part of my text because the hard facts are the most persuasive examples to prove my argument throughout my text.
