As we know, building international relationships are necessary in order to have plentiful, peaceful and cooperative life either in their own countries or abroad. Building international relationships is also a better way to help foreigners to blend into local community, and it is a better way to help local citizens to understand more about foreigners and their culture. The more we know about one another, the less misunderstanding we will have among us.
Since 2004, thousands of international students came to the United States and studied in American colleges. This number is increasing year by year apparently. There are approximately a hundred thousand Chinese students are studying as international students here in the United States. As one of them, I witnessed so many Chinese students have successfully blend into the local culture and community, and I had seen so many students from China were struggling in this country as well. Colleges are special communities. The reason why I put my research on campuses is universities gather most foreigners from all over the world. They are look like United Nations, and international relationships are built start on campus.
Foreigners have difficulties in blending themselves into local culture and community. For instance, it is easy to find the students who come from the same countries would like to stay together all the time on campus. They speak their mother languages most of the time, and seldom speak in English, not to mention talk to American students actively. International students and American students have different backgrounds, cultures and languages. And they have different concerns. There is no exception that every foreigner here has culture shock, but it is vary with each individual. It depends on how eager a foreign student wants to reduce culture shock in a short time. It is an inappropriate way to live in America. American students would not actively know other cultures and countries if foreign students keep themselves invisible.
Students are a group of people who are dealing with the situation of building international relationships. College life is the best period for meeting people, and for students, especially, knowing foreigners can be a special experience in their lives. Building relationships with other is important for American students. Particularly improve the relationships with others who come from different countries around the world. I understand as the most powerful country in the world, American people feel proud of their country. They support their government and their policies, but sometimes you just cannot rely on the relationships built by U.S. government efforts. The global issues, such as interfered other countries’ internal affairs, wars, climate change and economy, which made the Bush administration was the most controversial leadership in the past eight years. The judgments of Bush administration will affect the attitude towards American people. The United States and the people in America need sincere friends and partners to develop continuously. Friendships and relationships are not built when you need them. Especially, not just the United States, but the whole world is facing the challenges from economy. No one is able to get over the predicament on its own power even it is America.
A new era has arrived in the United States because they have a new leader and new administration. And it is also a good time to improve the relationships with one another. So do our individuals. We want more support, understanding and concern, and we want less argument, intolerance, and hate.
